RV Furnace Blower Runs, But No Heat? Here’s How to Fix It
There is nothing quite as frustrating as waking up in a chilly RV, hearing the furnace fan kick on, and waiting for warm air—only to get a blast of freezing wind before the whole system shuts down.
If your RV furnace blower runs, but you get no heat, you aren't alone. This is one of the most common issues RV owners face with Atwood, Dometic, and Suburban heating systems.
The good news? Because the blower fan is turning on, your thermostat, fuse, and main power supply are working. The failure is happening somewhere in the furnace's safety ignition sequence.
Here is a step-by-step walkthrough of why your furnace fan is running without igniting, how to troubleshoot it, and how to get your heat back on.
Understanding the RV Furnace Ignition Sequence
To fix the problem, it helps to understand how an RV furnace turns on. If one step in this chain fails, the control board will lock out the furnace and shut down the blower to prevent gas buildup or overheating:

Thermostat calls for heat: Sends 12V DC power to the furnace control board.

Blower motor turns on: Clears leftover gas fumes from the combustion chamber (purge cycle).

Sail switch closes :Airflow pushes a tiny microswitch closed to prove the fan is blowing fast enough.

High-limit switch confirms safe temperature: Ensures the furnace chamber isn't overheating.

Control board opens gas valve & fires igniter: Propane flows, the spark ignites the burner, and heat is produced.
If your blower runs for 30–60 seconds and then shuts off without heating, the system is failing at Step 3, 4, or 5.
4 Most Common Causes (and How to Fix Them)
1. The Sail Switch is Stuck or Faulty
Likelihood: Very High
The sail switch is a small safety mechanism with a lightweight metal arm ("sail"). When the blower reaches full speed, the movement of air pushes this arm down, signaling to the control board that it's safe to ignite the gas.

The Problem: Dirt, pet hair, dust bunnies, or spiderwebs love to wrap around the switch arm. If the sail switch can't close, the furnace will never open the gas valve or attempt to spark.

The Fix: Remove the outer furnace panel, pull out the sail switch, and clean off any lint or debris. Test it for continuity with a multimeter. If it stays open even when pushed manually, swap it for a replacement sail switch.
2. Low Battery Voltage or Restricted Airflow
Likelihood: High
Your furnace fan needs to spin fast enough to create the required CFM (cubic feet per minute) of airflow to engage the sail switch.

Low DC Voltage: If your house batteries are sitting below 11.5–12.0 volts, the blower motor might turn on, but it won't spin fast enough to trip the sail switch. Connect to shore power or run your generator to verify.

Blocked Vents/Ducts: Low airflow can also be caused by crushed ductwork, closed registers inside the rig, or insect nests blocking the outdoor intake/exhaust vents. Clear any blockages from your furnace vent.
3. Propane Supply or Gas Valve Faults
Likelihood: Moderate
If you hear a distinct clicking sound shortly after the blower starts, your furnace is trying to ignite, but gas isn't catching.

Empty Tanks or Air in Lines: Check that your LP tanks aren't empty and the main valve is open. If you recently changed tanks, light your stove burner for 30 seconds to bleed air out of the gas line.

Bad Gas Valve Solenoid: If propane is present at the inlet but the valve won't open when energized, the gas valve solenoid needs to be replaced.
4. Faulty Ignition Control Board or Electrode
Likelihood: Moderate
If the sail switch closes and gas flows, but you don't hear a rapid click-click-click spark sound:

Dirty/Misaligned Electrode: The spark igniter electrode inside the burner chamber can get corroded or bend out of position (it generally needs a $1/8$-inch gap).

Control Board Failure: Moisture, corrosion, or voltage spikes can ruin the furnace ignition board. If the board isn't sending 12V to the gas valve or spark igniter, it will need to be replaced.
